Contemporary inlaid olive green morocco gilt, signed at foot of spine “H. Crabbe”: on covers outer border of gilt fillets and blind tooled rolls, enclosing small black inlaid morocco tickets with gilt names of Racine’s plays (Alexandre, Bérénice, Iphigènie, Phèdre, &c.) and little red inlaid hearts in corners; central panel framed by a blind tooled roll and a frame made of four gilt fillets with corners "à la cathédrale" with green, red brown and beige inlays, in centres a large lozenge ornament of gilt scrollwork with fleurons, small circles and leaves, partly inlaid in green, red and brown morocco; flat spine gilt and inlaid accordingly, with one large superimposed block bearing the gilt author’s name on a brown inlay; edges of boards and turn-ins gilt; doublures and endleaves of light-blue watered silk; gilt edges. A spectacular romantic binding by Henri-Joseph Crabbe (1811-1891), active in Brussels where he established his own bindery some time before 1835 until ca. 1863. – Slightly spotted at beginning and end, otherwise a very good copy in a remarkable binding of excellent preservation. Provenance: from the bibliophile library of the Marquis Emmanuel du Bourg de Bozas–Chaix d’Est-Ange (1893-1990). The Marquis B. de B. was a notable bibliophile collector of the first half of the 20th century (bookplate). His important library was sold in Drouot-Paris in 1990.
