The relationship between Le Corbusier and the American author and publisher Marguerite Tjader Harris (1901–1986) was a deep and long-standing one that unfolded largely through correspondence. The relationship between Le Corbusier and Marguerite Tjader Harris spanned some thirty years. Between intimacy and distance: Biographers (such as Nicholas Fox Weber) describe the relationship as a predominantly epistolary (correspondence-based) affair, characterised by deep affection and emotional dependence. The tone of Le Corbusier’s messages ranged from tender and passionate to imploring. Around 1980, some of these highly personal letters were acquired through the antiquarian book trade (such as Serendipity Books), thereby finally making them accessible to researchers. A large proportion are now held in the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA). A few found their way into private collections. „Dear friend: Thank you for your letters, and your efforts to find me a publisher. Today, I had a meeting with some very important businessmen, who were discussing the construction of Algiers sky-scaper [sic], „the Cartesian sky-scraper“. It can be done. They were talking about sending a committee to New York to study the case. When? We’ll have to wait. It’ll end up being in winter, and never in summer! I’m thinking about the house. The water is freezing in November! Barr and his wife came over yesterday. They complained about the financial difficulties of the Rockfeller Modern Art foundation. They have kept all my models of the Palace of Loirets, Nemours etc.. without asking me for my permission. I told them that they could keep them, but that they would have to pay for them. Barr was willing to accept my proposiiton [sic], but he said he will have to solicit the generosity of wealthy donators… Once more, where are USA dollars? And Bouby? (Was this nice little boy called Bouby? I don’t remember very well.) What about his friendly dog? The dog had a man’s name, and the boy a dog’s name. Yes, it was Toutou, wasn’t it? I like Toutou very much. Is he a good boy? What about his young red-haired mother Diane, who used to wet her feet in the ocean? You see, my friend, I’d rather be there than talk about it.
