The completion of Cologne Cathedral in the 19th century was accompanied, both academically and artistically, by two monumental, large-format publications: the visionary pioneering work by Sulpiz Boisserée (published 1821–1831) and the highly precise documentary work by Franz Schmitz. Whilst Boisserée’s magnificent volume made the continuation of construction possible, both politically and emotionally, Schmitz provided the structural and architectural survey at the very peak of the cathedral’s completion. Franz Schmitz (1832–1894) worked directly at the Cologne Cathedral as master builder from 1859 to 1868. This large-format work is remarkable for its comprehensive, metrically precise and graphically brilliant documentation of the cathedral’s architecture and its entire interior furnishings. It features precise construction drawings of vaults, buttresses, tracery and the delicate sculptural details. Whereas Boisserée had drawn idealised visions 50 years earlier, Schmitz documented the real, highly modern engineering and the craftsmanship of the Prussian construction phase. Thanks to his training as a stonemason and architect at the cathedral, Schmitz’s work possesses an unrivalled technical depth. Every detail is reproduced to exact scale and served as a teaching manual on Gothic architecture for subsequent generations. Many of the details drawn by Schmitz were damaged during the Second World War or destroyed by environmental factors. To this day, his plates remain one of the most important sources for the restorers at the Cologne Cathedral in the faithful reconstruction of figures and finials. The colour plates included deserve special recognition, as in the 19th century they bridged the gap between technical architectural drawings and magnificent art publications. Whilst the majority of the work consists of fine line drawings, the colour plates document the cathedral’s windows in their full, colourful splendour. Condition: The plates are often, particularly at the edges, more or less affected by foxing; the colour plates, if at all, show this only outside the coloured areas. The text volume is clean and in very fine condition. OCLC lists 5 copies in North America: Columbia University (incomplete, lacks 3 plates, without the text volume); Rochester Public Library (only vol. 2); Art Institute of Chicago (without the text volume); Hennepin County Library; University of Nebraska (only vol. 2?).
