Under the pseudonym Ya. Miller (also Ja. Miller), the eminent Soviet poet Nikolai Zabolotsky published children’s literature, poetry and prose in the 1920s and 1930s. The book examines the revolutions and unrest in China and other Asian countries from a Soviet anti-imperialist perspective. It conveys the spirit of revolutionary struggle in a way that is suitable for children. The book stands out for its graphic design by Vera Jermolajeva (Alternative spelling: Wera Jermolajewa), one of the most important artists of the Russian avant-garde (a member of the UNOWIS group centred around Kazimir Malevich). She illustrated the 16 pages with striking, colourful drawings. Wera Mikhailovna Yermolayeva (also known as Vera Ermolaeva; 1893–1937) was one of the most significant and strong-willed women of the Russian avant-garde. As a painter, graphic artist, design theorist and pioneer of the modern children’s book, she played a decisive role in shaping the art world of the early Soviet Union. Her life was marked by brilliant creativity, physical limitations and a tragic end at the hands of the Stalinist terror. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Yermolayeva focused on illustrating children’s literature. She did not view the children’s book as merely text accompanied by pictures, but as an architectural total work of art. She headed the State Children’s Book Studio in Leningrad. She worked closely with the avant-garde poets of the OBERIU artists’ group (such as Daniil Kharms, Alexander Vvedensky and Nikolai Zabolotsky). Her work was characterised by bold colour combinations and innovative typography. Works such as the present ‘Восток в огне’ (East on Fire) brought her fame. The MoMA in New York holds numerous books illustrated by her, but not this one. OCLC can only locate one copy worldwide: Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. The staple binding is rusted, but otherwise it is a very fine copy.
